QuickCheck: Are scammers impersonating NSRC officials via phone calls?

WITH more and more people becoming aware of the different ways scammers are trying to cheat people - such as postal, bank, phone scams - it is only natural that they will develop new tricks.

Recently, a claim has been made that scammers have a new tactic; this time calling people up and posing as National Scam Resource Centre (NSRC) personnel.

VERDICT:

TRUE.

In a post on its official Facebook page, the Finance Ministry confirmed that scammers are indeed posing as NSRC personnel when calling up people in the hope of finding potential victims.

“The NSRC would like to remind people to not be fooled by statements or phone calls from anyone claiming to be an officer of the centre seeking assistance in investigating any financial fraud cases,” it said.

It added that the NSRC can be contacted by phone at (03) 8861 3830 or by email at nsrc@rmp.gov.my

“Warning, do not reveal your banking information. We must always be vigilant,” it added.
