SELANGOR recorded the highest number of domestic violence cases in Malaysia, with 4,690 cases for the period from 2020 to August 2023.
State women empowerment and welfare committee chairman Anfaal Saari said there were 813 cases reported to the police from January to August this year alone.
“Gombak recorded the highest number of cases with 147, followed by Kajang with 91 and Petaling Jaya with 79 cases.
“Despite the Domestic Violence Act 1994, these acts of violence have not been contained and are increasingly a cause for concern,” she said during the launch of “Rise! Fighting Violence Against Women and Children” campaign.
The campaign coincides with the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” starting from International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on Nov 25 and ending on Human Rights Day on Dec 10.
“This year’s theme aligns with the United Nations theme ‘Unite! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls’.
“This prevention narrative needs to be developed at every level through cooperation and collective commitment from all parties, ranging from grassroots to policy-making at both state and national levels,” said Anfaal.
She said the campaign was a continuous advocacy effort from the state government to educate and engage the community.
“Through various programmes held during this campaign, we hope to increase exposure and education about the forms of violence that have become prevalent in society, so that we can work towards curbing gender-based violence.
“We also want to empower women and the public in Selangor to continue advocating for the rights of oppressed women and children,” she added.
