CHUKAI: Some temporary flood relief centres will also be used as voting centres if there are floods during the Kemaman by-election on Dec 2, says Terengganu police chief Datuk Mazli Mazlan.
He said his team is prepared, in terms of personnel strength and assets, to ensure voting goes smoothly.
“If there are floods on voting day, then we have already agreed with the Election Commission that there will be relief centres that will be used as polling centres.
“We have arranged for manpower and assets to ensure the voting process goes smoothly.
“We are hoping there will be no floods on polling day, but in any case, we are prepared,” he told Bernama here yesterday.
Earlier, Mazli monitored the postal voting process by police and military personnel at the Kemaman district police headquarters (IPD).
The Kemaman by-election will see Barisan Nasional candidate Jen (Rtd) Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor battle it out in a straight fight against Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar from PAS.
Regarding yesterday’s postal voting process, Mazli said it involved 342 police and three military personnel who exercised their voting rights at Kemaman IPD and the Pasir Gajah police station.
He said all police personnel in Kemaman had registered as postal rather than early voters.
“This is because if the personnel opted for early voting (on Nov 28) and there was a flood, we would face difficulties in carrying out the tasks of rescuing flood victims,” he said.
Asked if any police reports were lodged during the campaign period for the Kemaman by-election, Mazli said they had not received any.
“This means both sides are complying with all the rules and laws,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a severe-level continuous heavy rain warning that is expected to occur in several areas in Kelantan and throughout Terengganu until tomorrow.
In a statement yesterday, MetMalaysia said the areas in Kelantan are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Baru, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai.
MetMalaysia also said alert-level continuous rain is also expected in Gua Musang, Kelantan, as well as in Jerantut and Kuantan, Pahang during the same period.
A continuous rain warning has also been issued for all districts in Perlis, Kedah and Penang, while in Perak, the areas affected are Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar and Manjung, which is expected to occur from Sunday until next Thursday.
