MCA has always been unwavering in defending vernacular education, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Previous MCA leaders who helped draft the Federal Constitution with other coalition members had included Article 152 to protect vernacular school education, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

"The foresight of our predecessors has become all the more precious and important in today's situation," the MCA president said after the Court of Appeal ruled that vernacular schools were constitutional and protected by Article 152 of the Federal Constitution.

"Chinese education in Malaysia is indeed safeguarded by the law," the Ayer Hitam MP added in an Instagram post on Thursday (Nov 23).

He said be it in the past, present or future, MCA has always been unwavering in defending vernacular education.

In a unanimous decision, a three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal on Thursday said vernacular schools in Malaysia were constitutional.

They said the Federal Constitution protects the use of Tamil and Chinese in these schools despite the Malay language being the country's official language.

Mappim, Gapena, Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) and Ikatan Guru-Guru Muslim Malaysia (I-Guru) had earlier appealed against the decision of the Kuala Lumpur and Kota Baru High Courts that dismissed their suits in December 2021 and May 2022, respectively.
