THE Selangor state assembly sitting on Friday (Nov 24) ended on a dramatic note after Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali (PN-Hulu Kelang) walked out of the afternoon session with 22 other assemblymen.

In a press conference, the former Selangor mentri besar said he was upset that Selangor state assembly Speaker Lau Weng San did not honour an earlier agreement to give seats in several select committees to the Opposition.

"When determining Perikatan members as candidates to sit on these committees, we studied their backgrounds, expertise and experience so that they can play a more effective role," he said.

Although Opposition assemblymen were given positions in the committees, Azmin said he was not satisfied that those nominated were either dropped or changed without consulting Perikatan.

He also said Lau insisted on passing the motion to approve the committees even though Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said he had no problem adjourning it until there was an amicable agreement.

When asked by reporters, Lau said that it was their right to walk out and there would be no consequences.

He said assembly members were free to apply to sit on any of the 10 committees but there was no guarantee that they would get selected.

"It is normal for representatives not to get appointments they applied for," he said, adding that he would not agree to an adjournment as the committee had to be approved before the next assembly sitting.
