#SheDares to Lead

Leadership is about daring to believe in change, even when the world says it’s impossible.

What does a leader look like? For women survivors of war, leadership begins with a choice—a choice to rise, when everything around them has fallen, and rebuild their lives and their futures.

Women in conflict zones face loss, displacement, and unimaginable trauma. Yet they refuse to be defined by it. Instead, they dare to turn strength into action and lead with compassion, courage, and conviction. From learning the skills to earn and save money, to launching a business and teaching others to do the same, these women are role models for their families and their communities. It’s about finding hope and lifting others up for larger purpose.

“Every time there’s a crisis, you will find women carrying the whole family on their shoulders... constantly building and rebuilding to change lives and nurture a new generation full of hope.” —Amani Mustafa, Palestine Country Director

We asked our colleagues across South Sudan, Nigeria and Iraq what 'daring to lead' means to them. Watch the video below to hear their unique perspectives.

At Women for Women International, we see the value in investing in the women who dare to lead despite the risks. Through our program they gain the skills, knowledge and training they need to realize their power.

Pola and her daughter
Women like Pola...

Just like many girls growing up in her community in Plateau State, Nigeria, Pola faced challenges that tested her strength and spirit from a very young age. But through hope, determination, and the support of a powerful program organized by Women for Women International, her story took a turn for the better. Pola’s journey, from working on her parents’ farm to becoming a woman who knows her worth and embraces her dreams exemplifies someone who refuses to be defined by her circumstances!

Because she dares, she demanded respect and strove to become financially independent. #SheDares to Lead

Yasmin al Jaabari
...or like Yasmin.

Yasmin al-Jaabari's journey has been one of pain, resilience, and determination to rise stronger for herself and her children. In 2005, her life changed forever when she was falsely accused by the Israeli occupation forces and arrested near her home in Hebron in the West Bank, Palestine. She was sentenced to 14 traumatic months in prison—a seemingly endless period of darkness, devoid of sunlight and air. Yet, despite the circumstances, she made a choice: She would not allow it to define her or remain a victim. Yasmin joined WfWI’s inaugural Stronger Women, Stronger Nations Program in Palestine in August 2025 to realize her dreams and become a role model for her children.

Because she dares, she chose to rise, to rebuild, and to lead with strength. #SheDares to Lead
